Tearing out your own hair. The disease is usually temporary and brings with it a secondary gain in disease (attention).
Lifetime prevalence 3% (women)
Hair of different lengths. There is no local, complete hair loss. Usually short hairs are still visible in the manipulated areas. However, this is usually out of focus. Discreet scalp. Unlike scarred alopecia, trichotillomania has hair follicles. Partly follicular haemorrhages can be found.
With this illness the anamnesis is not usable, since the plucking and tearing out of the hair is usually denied.
In the follicle lesions keratin is found, but also melanin deposits.
Hemorrhagia is visible.
