Chronic folliculitis of the beard, folliculitis barbae, Sycosis simplex, Sycosis non parasitaria, Alibert-Mentagra disease.

Chronic folliculitis of the beard, folliculitis barbae, Sycosis simplex, Sycosis non parasitaria, Alibert-Mentagra disease.

Inflammation caused mostly by Staphylococcus aureus, sometimes by Gram-negative bacteria.

  • Red, succulent, follicular bound, papules, plaques and pustules, which can also confluence extensively.
  • Clinic
  • Bacterial smear.
  • Mostly upper lips and cheeks.

Sometimes with hair loss scarring.

  • Disinfect razor. Wet shaving should be discontinued.

 

Topical Therapy

  • Quaternary ammonium compounds (Octenisept®-Lsg.)
  • Application 1-2x daily (only for a short time)

 

  • Clindamycin (Dalacin T®) emulsion 2x daily
  • Always use Procutol® skin wash lotion once a day to avoid resistance.
  • Side effects (very common): skin irritations (burning, itching, flaking, dry skin and redness).
  • CI: Antibiotic-associated colitis. Breastfeeding.

 

  • Dalacin T®- solution 2x daily

  • Tricolosan (Procutol®) Skin Wash Lotion
  • Directions: Like liquid soap or shampoo, let it work for 1-2 min.
  • CI: Hypersensitivities vs. Ingredients.
  • Systemic therapy according to antibiogram.
